Cocktails: Making Simple Syrup

*Post by Mark.

There's a few things that I realize I just need to have at all times in my refrigerator. I picked up a few empty condiment bottles at the housewares store so I can always have the essentials at hand. Essentials- ya know- like Spicy Mayo and Simple Syrup.

A main ingredient in so many cocktails, Simple Syrup is appropriately named because it is quite possibly the easiest recipe of all time. Making the syrup and having a little ready in the fridge is as important to the spontaneous afternoon cocktail as having a fully stocked bar... or a drinking problem.

Ready for the easiest recipe ever?

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water

Combine the ingredients in a medium-sized pot and bring them to a boil (below) until the sugar is completely dissolved. Let it cool and you have simple syrup.

Once it was cool enough, I poured the contents into a plastic bottle, and I'm hoping it keeps long enough to make its fair share of future cocktails. Expect to see some of them posted on here.

In addition to the alcoholic beverages, simple syrup is great for sweetening iced coffee or tea.

...why would we use this for anything other than alcoholic beverages? You KNOW me.

Just kidding. That's a great idea, actually.
