Satan's Ashes Pt. 2 (with video!)

*Post by Mark.

I'm not quite sure what we were expecting.

At best, I was pulling for a hospital visit. With our cameras rolling, blood coming out of the eyes or projectile vomiting would've been enough to take our video viral. A little part of me may have even been pulling for something like this. But after seeing Nick taste the hottest known pepper in the world without any table-pounding or steam pouring out of his ears, I was compelled to taste the Bhut Jolokia myself. How bad could it be?

While my several bites was maybe 1/20th of what Nick consumed, I can attest that it was indeed the hottest thing I've ever tasted. While there was no immediate knee-jerking effect to it, it had a slowly-unfolding and sustained burn - like being in a car accident... but in slow motion. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, or haven't yet read it, I'd urge you to check out Nick's firsthand account of eating an entire serving of the Satan's Ashes Curry.

But, if you're more of a visual person, can't read or are just a flat-out sadist, then you should probably check out the video below.

(And yes, I spelled tabasco wrong. But, it SHOULD be spelled tobasco.. Let's make it happen, internet.)

A couple hours after eating the curry, I felt the strangest sense of nausea - like a giant ball of energy was charging in the core of my stomach. Luckily, the sensation soon passed, but I can only imagine what forces were at play inside of Nick.

So, just how hot is this pepper?

For comparison's sake, let's take a quick look at the Scoville Scale, which can be used to measure the relative pungency of peppers.

  • Poblano Pepper - 500 - 2,500
  • Jalapeno Pepper - 2,500 - 8,000
  • Cayenne Pepper - 30,000 - 50,000
  • Habanero Chili - 100,000 - 350,000
  • Bhut Jolokia - 855,000 - 1,075,000
  • Pepper Spray - 2,000,00 - 2,500,000

So, what did we learn?

That's right. If you want that real burn, Pepper Spray is the way to go. We're already warming the skillet and getting the tomato paste ready..

This video is hilarious guys...fantastic work!!! I especially find it amusing that all of Angela's interaction with the pepper caused her bodily harm and yet...He still pushed onward and digested a plate of it. That's either pure skill or just plain insanity haha

Haha. Great video, guys! I hope you're okay after all of that.

OMG!!! No wonder I turned gray at a very early age. I have had one son get a tatoo this week that covered half his torso and another son that eats the hottest pepper in the world. I am exhausted and wonder why I didn't get a very nice daughter that would care for me in my old age?

Morgan-
Thanks so much! Yeah, Nick is kind of an insane person, which is why I love him so much.

Miguel-
Yup, we're okay, although I did get a weird looking rash that night...

Nancy-
Aw, they're good boys...just insane. And like I said, I had my phone at the ready to call my dad if any medical emergencies arose.

You guys are hilarious. Thanks for NOT sharing the day after. ;-) I don't think milk or olive oil shot is the answer, have a bucket of honey ready next time. Once I rubbed my nose while cutting habanero (it was itching!) and the only thing that could tame the burn was a lather of honey, on my nose, like a bear. It may not look hot, but that'd probably help with Angela's blisters.

I look forward to more of these videos on your blog.

Epicness all around. I'm half Indian and too chicken to eat curry that spicy so you guys are troopers. Awesome video!

Debb-
Wait, honey? I've never heard of that. That is very helpful information (and really would have been helpful on that day).

Lisa-
Before I got there, I had decided not to eat any of it, then I realized that I would at least have to taste it to cook it. And it was so delicious, I wanted more, which is why you see a segment where Mark has to forcibly remove the plate from my hands. Hurt so good.

Looove this video guys! Nick, this only makes me want to join you in being one of the brave few. Ang, have any left over chili? :)

Nick and company actually finished the curry off in the next couple days packing it for lunch and so forth.

I seriously want some, right now! :)

I think you should use this video as Nick's audition tape for The Bachelor, that is, if he's still alive.

Trina-
I've actually been thinking about ordering up some of this myself - it WAS really delicious, although after a few bites, you stop thinking about how it tastes...if you do end up trying it, let me know what you think.

Sara-
I was thinking that. It's a very attractive side of him, no?
